Katherine Howard believes that parks and play are magic. She is a leading voice on the ideas and systems which create green, vibrant, authentic, healthy places.
Katherine is skilled in parks, environment and recreation; planning, strategy, design, and policy. After more than 15 years working with municipalities in Australia and Canada, she has become particularly adept at teasing out complexity to find practical opportunities.
An expert problem solver, strategy coach and facilitator; working with people keeps her full of energy. Katherine is always up for lively conversations about big ideas, messy problems, dogs, wine, adventures and collaborations!
For the City of Vancouver’s Board of Parks and Recreation, Katherine orchestrated the creation of the award-winning Parks and Recreation Services Master Plan – VanPlay. The plan is transformational and provides the organisation with a strong foundation for its aspirations. VanPlay’s equity-driven approach reflects Katherine’s deep understanding of the systems at play and how to affect day-to-day decision making.
Katherine’s work has been featured by Monocle Magazine, World Resources Institute Ross Centre for Sustainable Cities (The City Fix), Park People, CBC, BC Healthy Communities, Best Cities and the (US) National Recreation and Park Association, World Urban Parks, and WRLDCTY.
She does her best thinking in, on or by the sea. So, fortuitously, Katherine has joined Xyst’s specialist parks and recreation consulting team based in Melbourne.
We look forward to Katherine helping Xyst make a difference to communities throughout Australia.
