To inform future decision making, Tauranga City Council engaged Xyst to do an observational study on the use of boat ramps and parking areas at three locations within Tauranga Harbour. We undertook this study during January and February 2021, aiming to build on the baseline established by our earlier study completed during the same months in 2019. The study involved vehicle and trailer counts in six separate zones, along with people counts at the Marine Park. A number of observations were made, including the increase in boat ramp demand which may also be partly due to the increased spend on recreational boats and personal water craft, as well as higher numbers of homeless people, several vehicles being used for sleeping in, and freedom campervans. A full report with recommendations has been tabled to Council and identifies reserve users, vehicle counts, vehicle categories and any specific events that occurred during the study timeframe.
