Russell Kororareka Cemetery

Extension Concept Plan

Xyst worked with Far North District Council to develop a detailed concept and design plan for the Russell / Kororareka Cemetery extension in the Bay of Islands.

The project aimed to expand the cemetery by 2,272 m² to meet future interment needs while respecting the site’s cultural significance and scenic hillside location.

The project involved engagement with the project working group, including Council members, community representatives, hapū, RSA, and other stakeholders. Xyst’s work incorporated detailed site investigations prepared by others including geotechnical assessments, ecological studies, archaeological surveys, ground-penetrating radar analysis, and soil depth testing to ensure the suitability of the extension for a range of interment types.

Population growth, evolving community preferences, and trends in burial and ash interments were analysed to ensure long-term cemetery capacity. The revised design also addressed site accessibility, vehicle and hearse access, slope and orientation, amenity enhancement, and weed and pest management, providing a practical, culturally sensitive, and sustainable solution for the cemetery’s future development.

Project Benefit

Development of a Concept Plan that optimises land use and provides diverse burial and ash interment options to meet community needs over the next 30 years.
