Level 3 Annual Playground Safety Inspections

Over two weeks, Xyst conducted Comprehensive Level 3 Annual Playground Safety Inspections for all 57 playgrounds within Hutt City.

This project focused on the capture of base playground asset data while undertaking a thorough compliance check against the current New Zealand Playground Standard, NZS 5828:2015. Our inspections were efficiently managed using the Safety Culture platform and bespoke inspection forms developed specifically for this project.

All equipment or surfacing identified as a hazard, or found to be non-compliant with NZS 5828:2015, was then assessed against a risk matrix. This process allowed for the identification of proportionate responses and helped determine the urgency of any required actions. These inspections served as a vital, independent audit of the work completed by the Council’s contractor, providing an objective assessment of playground safety and compliance.

By providing a clear snapshot of the condition and compliance status of all assets, our reporting has empowered Council to transition from reactive maintenance to proactive, evidence-based asset management, ensuring resources are allocated effectively for both immediate safety improvements and long-term capital planning.

Project Benefit

Our independent playground safety inspections were carried out in accordance with NZS 5828:2015, and provide clear, unbiased reporting, helping Hutt City Council’s asset managers make informed decisions about the safety of their public playground equipment and surfacing.
